BURPENGARY Plaza will be unrecognisable by 2017 with work set to begin on a major redevelopment. Once finished, the plaza will boast a 7000sq m Kmart, including Kmart Tyre and Auto, new speciality stores, a restaurant precinct, food court with drive-thru facilities.

LJ Hooker’s director of commercial assets, Ashley Moffat, said all existing retail space would also be updated, including a full refurbishment of Woolworths Supermarket.

“When the development is finished you won’t notice the difference between the old and the new,” Mr Moffat said.

“This will take Burpengary Plaza from being a neighbourhood centre to a subregional shopping centre.”

Mr Moffat said the new development would eliminate the need for local residents to travel to larger shopping complexes at North Lakes and Chermside.

“We hope people will take ownership of Burpengary Plaza and see it as a place where they can spend half a day,” he said

Mr Moffat was unable to disclose the cost of the redevelopment but said it was in the tens of millions of dollars.

He said work was due to start imminently and the aim was to have it completed by 2017.

“The centre will continue to trade as normal throughout the redevelopment,” Mr Moffat said.
